Resurrected in festering slime (compilation)

05/06/09  ||  Lord K Philipson

Andrés Furukawa (of the band Darkcreed on this compilation) is a fucken terrific dude. He sent me this one on muthafucken LP and thanked me alot for the help – help I’m not even sure of how I provided to be honest. But it was cool to see a goddamned LP again, it’s been a while. Unfortunately I threw my record player out the window many moons ago but that won’t stop me from giving this thing a feature on GD while the physical LP serves some kind of purpose in one of my closets. I guess I’ll just have to make shit up as for how everything sounds, right?

Nah, ofcourse I got these tunes in digital form as well so you need not worry, everything is in order, fuckos.

“Resurrected in festering slime” is a death metal compilation with 14 bands, most of them you never heard of, I’m sure. Neither have I, which might not be a good sign to begin with. As I have grown older (and heard everything good already) I sure haven’t cared much to stay up-to-date with all the fucken shit bands polluting the asshole we know as our planet, but seeing how Darkcreed was a fine fucken example of a good death metal unit the last time I heard them – this could actually be an ok compilation if the standard of the rest of the bands keep up with what they (Darkcreed) do with the deadliest of metal (I really should think about how to punctuate and use commas some times but for the moment being it feels like I have way more important things to care about and it’s not like this fantastic review will be suffering much from semi-professional writing anyways since we have been all about pissing on bands and lousy websites who deserve it since the day we started and you know this is absolutely true so the actual writing might have some errors if you really wanna play that game and all we have to say about that is that you can play blastbeats over any given riff and it’ll prolly sound fantastic).

I know, that over-the-top sentence was unnecessary but admit it – you smiled a little. And if you didn’t – Fuck you. And you. And you.

Enough of the hilarious comedy, let’s go thru the fucken thing then and see who know their shit and who don’t. First off, if you are new to death metal (you should fuck off already from Global Domination) and think that hyper speed and über-technicality is the way death metal is supposed to be executed – read no more. Go back to your Hannah Montana collection and your momma’s hanging tits, there’s more to this specific genre than what you experienced when you first heard it in early 2000. There’s something called old school death metal, and this is what you’ll find on “Resurrected in festering slime”. It sounds like all of the bands included want to pay homage to the scene that once was. I like the idea, I grew up with that particular scene, you know. I was there in the beginning, I’m that old. I remember meeting Uffe Cederlund (semi-known from a band called Nihilist back then) at a concert at which he gave me a brand new recording with his band that just changed name to Entombed. We all know what that demo, “But life goes on”, led to; a classic monster of an album called “Left hand path” that was blessed with a beautiful Dan Seagrave cover where one of the tombstones read “Rest in festering slime”. You get the point.

Before we start, lemme just stress the following. I have refused to read up on any of the bands for the simple reason I don’t wanna know where they are from. I have heard of a few of the included ones, but most of them are, as mentioned, new acquaintances to me. So, when I say that some of them sound Swedish, they might even be from fucken Sweden and I wouldn’t have a clue. This makes the listening experience a hella lot more interesting to me.

With all that shit out of the way, let’s move on.

Bombs Of Hades – “Carnivores”: Despite a shit moniker, Bombs Of Hades fire up some fine death metal with a somewhat lacking production. Take equal parts of Bolt Thrower’s slower parts (listen to the intro), some Dismember and the general Swedish death metal scene of ancient times and you end up with a well-delivered tune that will shake yer pimple-infested arsehole. This compilation starts off real well I’m happy to say. Bombs Of Hades need to change their name but that’s pretty much it coz they sure know how to churn out the music. 7,5 out of 10.

Eviscerated – “The Chalice”: I have a feeling that under-produced bands is something we’ll have to deal with on this comp, as evident in Eviscerated’s case. It’s a shame coz these guys also hand out some decent death metal at times, the problem is that it’s hard to really get into it when it sounds more or less like a rehearsal tape from the early 90’s (which is not meant as a compliment though I’m sure they take it like one). The Entombed influence is nice though (check from the mid part and forward of this tune and you’ll see what I mean) and keeps this song from being slaughtered by me. Eviscerated is alright but could have done so much better with a good production, not to mention that those movie samples are quite useless. 6,5 out of 10.

Darkcreed – “Shattered Entrails”: And then we have Darkcreed that I mentioned in the beginning of this review. Shitty production is but a memory now and Darkcreed prove themselves to be on another level compared to most bands here. These guys capture the essence of older Grave (the slower passages) and semi-modern death (95 and onwards a few years) and they do it real good. They could have done themselves a favor and utilized a more brutal guitar sound a’la the classic Entombed/Dismember sound we all love from the late 80’s/early 90’s, that would have improved the overall impact. But nonetheless, Darkcreed is a fucken good band and deserve a 8 out of 10.

Rape Pillage & Burn – “1911”: I wouldn’t be surprised if the lyrics deal about war on this one, haha… RP&B worship the classic times of old and make sure to re-use the riffs that bands (especially the Swedish ones, again) invented in the early 90’s. This tune has a middle part that has all the potential to groove like a muthabitch but fails to do so thanx to choosing a few notes that don’t really work together that well. It’s a shame. RP&B is not overly impressive and will have to devour a score of 5 out of 10.

Feral – Altar of Necromancy: I have a feeling that these guys are from up north in Sweden, but I could be wrong. There is also a chance that we (could be I even) have reviewed something from them on GD coz I recognize their moniker quite a bit though I can’t say that I have the slightest of clues as for what they sound like. Feral incorporates some thrashier riffing into their death metal and the production is ok. Unfortunately they come across as a little too “happy” to be a full-on death metal constellation. Too much jump da fuck up passages for me to fully enjoy. Nonetheless a decent band and the ending groove is nice. 5,5 out of 10.

Maim – Envy The Dead: I guess that noise is supposed to be the vocals… And I guess they were overly fx’d becoz they originally suck. Actually, they could have put effects on everything here coz Maim simply don’t cut it among this roster. Some early Grave vibes with some Slayer-ish parts, that sounds good, right? The only downside is that they don’t pull it off in a good way whatsoever. 3 out of 10.

Graveless – In Articulo Mortis: And while we are talking about Grave we get a band called Graveless… They prolly took their name from Grave and their “Soulless” album, combined the two and voila! – what a fucken beautiful moniker. IF YOU ARE 3 YEARS OLD! Luckily their semi-tight and shitty produced (I know I mention productions a lot, that crap is important to me so go fuck yourself) is up their with the band name so hey – congrats. It doesn’t help that some Slayer vibes are present in between the poor “blasts” and supposed-to-be groovy riffs, nor the fact that they sing “angel of death” at one point. Graveless is quite talentless and the heavy break in the middle won’t erase that fact. 3,5 out of 10.

Crucifyre – The Fetching: I actually thought the tune was call “The felching“ and laughed my ass off. One must never laugh at death metal. Once again the band in question went to Shitty Sound Studios at Shitty Street in Shitville and recorded some massively (newer) Entombed influenced death metal. Even the vocalist fucko wants to sound like LG Petrov but fails enormously. The riffs are ok at times (at best) but as a whole Crucifyre (wtf?) is yet another band no one will ever give a fuck about. Even when the newer Entombed suck they still piss on these guys. 4 out of 10.

Unspoken – “Cold, Bleak and Dead”: Disillusioned arrangements where the “blasts” (they are hardly fast enough to be called a regular blast) end up when you least expect it. I get some (awful)Six Feet Under/(bad)Obituary vibes from some of the riffage but much like Crucifyre it passes for ok in the end for some reason. 4 out of 10.

Mr. Death – Jesus Christ Fuck: These guys are from Sweden, I’m sure of it coz I think some of them are hanging around the GD forums. Did they ever expect to be taken seriously with a moniker like “Mr. Death”? What are their goals? To hand out some ok death metal and have a laugh? Well, I’m sure they are happy then coz it’s exactly what they do. It’s just a shame I couldn’t give a fuck about them. 4.

Stench – “Stench of Death”: Half-thrashy death metal with blasts and some melodies. Add to that a shit-vocalist and an ok production and you end up with Stench. There’s no chance anyone will give a fuck about this when they have the old’n‘goldies to listen to. Some of the riffs sound like they could have been on a Sacred Reich album. I don’t know if that’s a good or a bad thing. And what’s with the fucken crappy ending? 3,5.

Chronic Torment – “Certain Death”: Mr. Death, “Stench of death”, “Certain death”, “Envy The Dead”… There’s a lot of fucken “death” and “dead” on this album, huh? Despite the incredibly annoying and loudly mixed snare and vocals here, Chronic Torment definitely ranks up as one of the better bands on this compilation. Nice 90’s inspired keyboard choirs that I didn’t see coming and some cool riffs makes for a good band. The fact that I get some Peter (Vader) vibes at times don’t hurt either. And most importantly: there’s an absolutely muthafucken excellent doublebass section in this one. I recommend this shit. 7,5 out of 10.

Morbus Chron – “Putrid Smell of Hell”: Is that supposed to be a bass in the intro? Sounds like someone is farting in the bathtub. This crap isn’t the tightest since Rob Halford lost his virginity and you’ll not see me go “HOOOORAAAYYY!!! THE SAVIORS OF DEATH METAL ARE HERE!!!” anytime soon over this band. I guess, if you look real close, you can hear some early Pestilence influences (I am most possibly stretching things here, these guys shouldn’t have the honor to be mentioned in the same sentence as that once legendary band) in some of the riffs. In one ear, out the other. 3 out of 10.

Bonesaw – “Revolution Through Wargasm”: And now I have no fucken idea what happened… Spastic arrangements and playing de luxe, does that sound like your cup of death metal tea? I thought not. Bonesaw isn’t the worst of the bunch, but they are not far from it either. Muddy death metal with no highlights whatsoever. The absolute low must be the hideous guitar solo though. What a fucken idiot. If you can’t even play supposed-to-be bad solos (you know, the ones Kerry King does all the time), don’t play – period. They should be happy they made it to an LP though. There are better bands that never will achieve that. 3,5 out of 10.

So, how about an ending rant?

This is an ok compilation with more poop than peaches. Darkcreed relatively easy takes the gold medal home to wherever they live and a few others share the silver and bronze ones. The rest can send in their applications for next years Special Olympics.

After I listened thru this album I decided to check on all the bands featured to see if there were any surprises for me… There were… No wonder Bombs Of Hades were fucken good. They feature people who’ve been involved in bands such as God Macabre, Abhoth, Utumno and Tribulation. Feral are from Sweden. I knew it, kind of. Darkcreed got members from the UK, Sweden and Mexico obviously. Graveless are obviously Swedish as well, much to everyone’s misfortune. Ever heard of bands like Invidious, Degial & Anguish? Me neither, but some of Graveless’ guys played with those bands at some time it seems. Wow. Eviscerated are Swedes as well? Damn… Rape, Pillage & Burn are, according to the press sheet, featuring ex-members of Dismember & Murder Squad and members of Divine Eve. It didn’t help them though. I’ll never get the Murder Squad or Autopsy kind of death metal that some (deaf people) love. To me, those kind of death metal cd’s may serve as something you insert into yer anus in lack of better things do do. Maim are Swedish too? What is this, a fucken full-on Swedish death metal compilation? Obviously, coz Mr. Death, Chronic Torment, Crucifyre and Morbid Chron are also Swedish. I kinda had that feeling about Crucifyre, but wasn’t sure. Morbid Chron could have been from Brazil for all I knew… Bonesaw are from Scotland/UK and we all know that the best thing to come out of the UK region, apart from the mighty Bolt Thrower ofcourse, is Acid Reign, and they hardly play death metal. The sole Norwegian band is Unspoken. It’s not like Norway ever was a country known for spawning excellent death metal bands so one contribution is more than enough.

If you wanna hear some more or less tributes to the days of old school (Swedish) death metal, complete with unreadable logos and overall shitty productions – “Resurrected in festering slime” is a good compilation with bands you didn’t know existed.

I won’t give this an overall rating but will send out some devil horns to everyone involved (I have prolly met a bunch of you in real life too back in the day, good to see you’re still living the death metal dream to some point) for the work put into it, the spirit some of the material contains and for the fact that death metal is the best fucken music in the world.

If you don’t count TATU, Vanessa Carlton and The Prodigy that is.
